I do expect to find a rug under a table in a dining room. In a kitchen, not so much, but in general I always think a rug under the table makes the room appear more "finished." As Shee said, the rug needs to be large enough so that when you pull out the chair to sit, the chair stays on the rug.
If it's placed under an outdoor dining table, you should be able to pull out all the chairs and have the legs remain on the rug. Generally, the rug should be at least 2' wider than the table on all sides. Below are common sizes for outdoor rugs. Shop 5' x 8' Outdoor Rugs. Shop 8' x 10' Outdoor Rugs. However, wool is the most durable material for a dining room rug. Wool rugs can be used on any hard surface such as hardwood, tile or linoleum floors, and it has a natural oil called lanolin, which repels stains and resists dirt. Wool is a natural choice if you are concerned with finding a practical solution for the dining room rug.It just feels “cleaner” for a dining room. Another rule of thumb is that the rug should be large enough that when you pull out the chairs, they remain on the rug. You don’t want to be wobbly…. That being said, I would re-evaluate after you’ve put up your light fixture and added something for the wall.
